Statement
Amanda Reeves’ rich and tempered colour tones lend each of these new works its own personality. The apparent simplicity of these paintings belies the subtle intricacies of palette and composition. The tonal shifts and variant sizes of the shape elements create overlapping and integrated layers of space. Washes of pigment in the underpainting further challenge the perceptual grounding of the picture plane. The shapes recede from or burst out of the painting, creating echoes and shadows of each other. The ghost shapes slide in and out of the peripheral vision of the viewer, increasing the layering and complexity of the piece, thereby intensifying the perceptual experience of the viewer.
